Woodrow Wilson Johnson Pianista, vocalista y compositor nace en Darlington (Carolina del sur) el 10 de enero de 1915 y muere de un tumor el 9 de febrero de 1977. En 1938 se traslada a New York y en 1939 viaja a Europa formando parte del espectáculo del Cotton Club. A su vuelta, en noviembre de 1939, ficha por Decca, una relación que le llevaría hasta 1952; en 1953 firmaría por Mercury, hasta principios de los

Ella Johnson, su hermana pequeña, nace también en Darlington el 22 de junio de 1923 y muere el 16 de febrero de 2004 en New York. Se une a la pequeña orquesta de dieciséis músicos de su hermano, en 1940. En 1941 realiza su primera grabación, Please Mr. Johnson y en 1944 llega al número uno en las listas de rhythm’n’blues con la canción When my man comes home.
