A finales de 1965 creó su propia discográfica con los sellos Bang y Shout junto a Jerry Wexler, Ahmet Ertegun y Neshui Ertegun. El primer éxito de Bang fue I want Candy (1965) de los Strangeloves, y su primer número uno Hang On Sloopy (1965) de los McCoys, con un Rick Derringer muy jovencito.

Neil Diamond grabó en Bang algunos de sus primeros éxitos (para mi los mejores), Cherry cherry, Kentucky woman, Girl you'll be a woman soon y Solitary man, pero la producción no fue de Berns, sino de su amigo Jeff Barry (el del sombrero). Aquí los tenemos a los tres junto a Ellie Greenwich, coproductora junto con Jeff Barry, de la que ya hablaré en otra ocasión.
Shout era un sello más orientado hacia el rhythm’n’blues y dos de sus valores más importantes eran Erma Franklin, Piece of my Herat (1967) (Janis Joplin hace una versión impresionante en 1969) .... y Freddie Scott, Are you lonely for me (1966) (número uno cuatro semanas seguidas, en las listas de rhythm’n’blues), Am I grooving you (1967) compuesta a medias con Jeff Barry, He ain't give you none (1967) ....

A Lou Christie le produjo cuatro canciones, tres de ellas en Roulette, You may be holding my baby (1964), There they go (1964), Maybe you'll be there (1964) y una en Co & ce, Outside the gates of heaven (1966).
